Stock falls on tax-hike worries - 2003-05-31
The stock of casino operator Penn National Gaming Inc. fell by $2.58, or 14 percent, to $15.97 and traded as low as $14.75 this morning becase of fears of higher taxes in Illinois.

Penn said a gaming-tax increase proposal by Gov. Rod Blagojevich would raise its taxes by $29 million, in addition to a $19 million annual increase last year.

House OKs slots at New Orleans track - 2003-05-31
Slot machines may be brought to a New Orleans' horse racing track under legislation approved by the House on Thursday in a 66-31 vote.

The bill by Sen. Lambert Boissiere, D-New Orleans, goes next to Gov. Mike Foster. It was approved by the House with little discussion. New Orleans voters will now decide whether the Fair Grounds can install 700 of the gambling machines.

Slot machines had been barred from the track because Harrah's Entertainment Inc.'s casino was granted a monopoly on gambling in New Orleans. The two have since cut a deal that would permit the track to add slots.
