Calumet City drops out of casino race — for now - 2004-01-11
Calumet City Mayor Michelle Markiewciz Qualkinbus withdrew the city from the running for the state's 10th casino license Friday.

The mayor said that while the city was still interested in receiving the license, local officials felt the city could not afford to continue negotiations to acquire land for the casino at this time.

She said the city would continue to work with the Potowatomi Native American tribe of Wisconsin to obtain a casino license in the future. She left open the possibility for both a state license or a Native American-operated casino, which would not require a state license.

Cheesy tribute - 2004-01-11
Debates over opening an additional Native American casino in northeastern Wisconsin have come and gone in recent years, but the region isn’t alone.

Dane County is in the midst of a heated discussion over whether a Ho-Chunk Nation bingo hall in Madison should be transformed into a full-fledged casino.

And with a countywide referendum vote scheduled for February, a Madison cheese retailer is trying to inject some fun in an otherwise serious debate.

His strategy: an in-store “Cheesino.”

Jeff Price, owner of the House of Wisconsin Cheese at 107 State St., said the tongue-in-cheek theme would be around for the next month or so in his store.
