Casino opponent says more traffic a safe bet - 2004-01-13
False Creek resident Linda Lauritzen was unhappy about what she found out yesterday at an open house about the casino proposed for her Vancouver neighbourhood.

The Downtown Casino at the Plaza of Nations, a joint venture of the Royal Diamond and Grand Casino groups, is aiming for 600 slots, 60 gaming tables and a cafe.

"When there's stuff happening at the Plaza of Nations, there is a lot of traffic that comes down our way, a lot of noisy, partying people," said Lauritzen. "I am definitely concerned."

New police juror doesn't take seat - 2004-01-13
An elected member of the Calcasieu Parish Police Jury, who has been prohibited from working at a casino at the same time, refused to take the oath of office.

The state ethics board said the law prohibits elected officials from having any dealings with gambling businesses, except as a patron. Kevin Guidry, who was elected last fall, challenged the court ruling, but lost.

Guidry works for Isle of Capri in a marketing position. The casino said it would have to fire Guidry if he took his seat on the police jury.
