Lucky Horseshoe: Harrah's to buy Vegas casino - 2004-01-14
Harrah's Entertainment said yesterday it has reached a preliminary agreement to buy Binion's Horseshoe Hotel & Casino and has plans to reopen the legendary Las Vegas casino as soon as possible.

Terms of the proposed deal were not revealed, although Harrah's said it would take responsibility for the property's liabilities.

Last week, U.S. marshals raided the casino, closing the home of one of gambling's great competitions, the World Series of Poker.

Fans brave tryouts for role on 'Survivor' - 2004-01-14
A ritual takes place at the Rau household in Highland every time an episode of "Survivor" is aired on TV.

Michelle Rau prepares fish for dinner, the family lights tiki torches or candles and unplugs the phone. Rau, who has never missed an episode since the series hit the airwaves in May 2000, was among more than 1,000 people Tuesday who were present at a "tryout" session at Harrah's East Chicago Casino.

"I've learned to outwit and outplay two ex-husbands," said Rau, a bartender in Griffith. "I can certainly outwit 16 strangers I don't care about."
