Tribes wary of giving more casino profits to California - 2004-01-15
Indian tribes with casino gambling are prepared to be good neighbors and citizens, their leaders say, but that doesn't necessarily mean giving more money to the state simply because California is in an economic slump.

"Our relation with non-tribal governments should be conducted in the spirit of honesty, openness and, when appropriate, friendship," Anthony Miranda, chairman of the California Nations Indian Gaming Association told several hundred people gathered here Wednesday for the annual Western Indian Gaming Conference.

County casino panel postpones decision - 2004-01-15
The outlook for a new casino in St. Louis County darkened Wednesday when a selection committee postponed for a month the decision that was scheduled to be made today.

A separate city of St. Louis selection committee still will make its choice today between two companies vying to build new gambling halls in the city and the county.

But the county's surprise announcement raised more questions about whether a casino will ever be built in South County, where it faces growing opposition among some residents.
