Baer still wants Beverly Hillbilly casino in Carson City - 2004-01-02
Former "Beverly Hillbillies'' star Max Baer says he's moving ahead with plans to convert the old Wal-Mart store in Carson City into a "Hillbillies''-style hotel and casino.

Some neighbors in the south Carson shopping center, including the JC Penney store, wish he would take his oil derrick to another location.

Baer told the Carson City Rotary Club he's persistent. In his words, "My intention has always been to put the project there, and I am going to do it. I own the property and I will put nothing else there.''

Vegas management company closes neighborhood casino - 2004-01-02
There were no New Year's celebrations for people at Duke's Casino in downtown Sparks.

The neighborhood club across the street from John Ascuaga's Nugget unexpectedly told its 52 workers it was shutting down, effective Thursday.

The reasons for the shutdown were not given, and all questions were directed to the casino's Las Vegas-based management company. Officials at Archon Corp. could not be reached for comment.
