Packer gamble pays off - 2004-01-20
Kerry Packer's business nous shone through again yesterday when his recently acquired controlling stake in Burswood Casino soared in value.

Shares in the PBL-backed gaming house soared to a five-year high yesterday after the resort announced a bigger than expected first-half profit.

Burswood told the market it would record a $23 million operating profit in the first half of 2003-04 – more than double what it earned in the previous year and five times the previous corresponding period.

The result signalled a reversal in fortunes for the Perth casino operator, which reported a poor $11.1 million profit in 2002-03 after being cleaned out by international high rollers.

e Ho-Chunk weigh in with casino study - 2004-01-20
The first of two studies on the potential impact of a casino in Dane County were published Monday, estimating that turning DeJope Bingo Hall into a casino would generate more than 1,300 jobs and bring $47 million a year to the community.

The $18,000 study was commissioned in early December by the Ho-Chunk Nation-funded Coalition for Fair Indian Gaming and Revenue Sharing Agreements.

A local anti-casino group, No Dane Casino, will release its study of the potential influence of a casino today. The group paid $4,000 to William Thompson, a professor at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, for the study.
