Governor opposes move to open new casino on reservation - 2004-01-22
Gov. Bill Owens claims he can stop a casino from opening on any new Indian reservation.

The governor had his legal office review existing law after a Longmont-based investment firm, along with the Southern Cheyenne and Arapahoe tribes, announced plans to build a casino on newly designated reservation land.

The attorneys believe that federal law on this issue is very clear. It states the governor has authority to prohibit gaming on any reservation created after 1988.

Casino Purse Supplement Considered in New Jersey - 2004-01-22
In a plan being considered by the New Jersey legislature, the governor's office, and the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority, Thoroughbred and Standardbred purses may be supplemented by profits from Atlantic City casinos, perhaps even this year.

Representatives from the three factions are hopeful the deal can be struck with the casino industry in lieu of the installation of video lottery terminals at racetracks. VLTs at tracks might require a constitutional amendment.
