Mayor Likes Summit's Casino Odds - 2004-01-22
Summit Mayor Joseph Strzelczyk said the village has "a heck of a shot" at getting the state's 10th casino license. The companies working to bring a casino to the village have submitted their bid to state officials, but the location of the proposed casino will be chosen later, officials said during Tuesday's village board meeting. Mandalay Bay Resort and Hyatt Development Corp., operators of the Grand Victoria casino in Elgin, have submitted a sealed bid to the Illinois Gaming Board.

The Grand Victoria is Illinois' most lucrative riverboat casino, and village officials said they hope the operators can replicate its success in Summit.

NDP folds on ATM issue - 2004-01-22
The NDP government has cancelled plans to install ATMs in Winnipeg casinos, admitting the cash machines might cause problem gamblers to spend more. "It's not something I'm willing to consider in the short term," Lotteries Minister Scott Smith said yesterday.

Earlier this month, Smith said the province was looking at installing ATMs at the Club Regent and McPhillips Street Station casinos for safety reasons and because customers were demanding it.
