Governor Proposing State-Owned Casino - 2004-01-22
Gov. Kathleen Sebelius' bill for expanding gambling would have developers compete to operate one or more state-owned casinos, a top assistant says.

Sebelius' bill, which she plans to submit to legislators within two weeks, will set up a board to review proposals for state-owned casinos, said Matt All, her chief counsel.

The bill could set up a race between the tribes and non-tribal developers to be the first to manage a casino in Wyandotte County, which is considered a prime location, in part because it is home to the Kansas Speedway.

House Gaming Chair Says New Casino Taxes Unlikely - 2004-01-22
Rep. Bobby Moak, chairman of the new House Gaming Committee, says he doesn't predict tax raises on casinos in the next four years.

But, in an interview Tuesday, he added: "I'm not going to say 'never.' Nobody knows what will happen tomorrow."

Mississippi has struggled with a tight state budget the past three years, and some people have proposed raising gaming taxes to generate more revenue.
