Date set for casino election in Webster - 2004-01-28
Voters from across Webster County will head to the polls March 23 to vote on whether they want to legalize gambling on a riverboat casino.

A petition requesting the referendum was submitted to the Board of Supervisors last week, but a date for the special election was not officially set until Tuesday’s meeting.

Questions surrounding how a proposed casino would impact the county were presented by opponents of the gambling issue, adding to a more comprehensive list handed to the supervisors when the petition for the election was first presented.

Mixed reports on new Nevada taxes - 2004-01-28
Nevada lawmakers got mixed reports Tuesday on earnings from a plan that's expected to generate a record $833 million in new or higher taxes _ and also were urged to seek exemptions to help various business enterprises.

The Legislative Committee on Taxation, Public Revenue and Tax Policy was told by its fiscal analysts that casino and sales levies are up so far this fiscal year, but collections are just starting with some of the taxes in the new plan.
