Ho-Chunk revenue, added services called a wash - 2004-01-28
If DeJope Bingo Hall is developed into a casino, the city of Madison's annual share of Ho-Chunk revenue
will most likely be just enough to cover added police and fire costs, according to a city report released Tuesday.

It won't be a windfall for city residents, said Mayor Dave Cieslewicz, who criticized a pro-casino group's advertising campaign that showcases how local governments might spend Ho-Chunk money if voters approve a Feb. 17 referendum to expand gambling at DeJope.

"They're overselling it," Cieslewicz said. "People are led to believe that all they have to do is choose between property tax relief, expanded emergency services, better schools or social services."

City wants larger cut of casino revenue - 2004-01-28
Opelousas leadership wants to get a larger piece of the gambling profits from the Evangeline Downs Racetrack and Casino, but local legislators say that decision may be premature.

"We are not getting enough money from this deal," said Alderman Joe Charles. He said he called legislators to ask that they revisit the statute.

In its first month of operation, the casino collected $3.4 million in gambling revenue. While a portion of the money will go to racing purses and breeder associations, the rest has been divided among eight entities throughout the parish, including municipalities.
