Beauprez Opposed To Casino - 2004-01-03
Rep. Bob Beauprez, R-Colo., met with supporters of a proposal to establish an Indian reservation with a $100 million casino east of Denver International Airport, but they weren't able to get his support.

"The congressman continues to oppose the expansion of gaming in Colorado," a Beauprez spokesman said.

The proposal by Council Tree Communications calls for buying 300 to 500 acres 15 to 30 miles east of Denver, creating a reservation based on century-old Cheyenne and Arapaho land and water claims, and building a casino.

Tracks Push For Casino Gambling - 2004-01-03
Assuming that legislators are willing to permit the voters of the commonwealth decide the issue, the Kentucky horse racing industry is planning a constitutional amendment for the 2004 General Assembly to consider that would allow casino gambling at racetracks.

Racetrack owners, horsemen and breeders say allowing such gambling could generate more than $500 million a year in taxes for state and local governments beginning in mid-2005, in time for the second half of the upcoming budget cycle.

If the proposal passes -- it would need a "super-majority," 60 percent of the votes -- in each chamber, the amendment could go on the ballot in November.
