Schaghticokes Gain Federal Recognition; Fairfield County Casino Possible - 2004-01-30
In a blow for Connecticut casino opposers, the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs today gave the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation recognition.

The decision could pave the way to more gambling casinos in Connecticut, possibly Fairfield County in the Danbury area.

State Attorney General Richard Blumenthal said he would appeal the ruling.

Westport First Selectwoman Diane Goss Farrell and Rep. Christopher Shays were among officials who immediately denounced the decision.

With parking lots at Indian casinos packed with cars, there seems to be a buzz symbol called “Las Vegas style gambling” that arouses the ire of opponents.

Gamble, as defined in the dictionary, is to bet money on the outcome of a game, contest or other event. Las Vegas and Indian Casino simply mean gamble.

Many folks oppose the notion of Oklahoma hosting 80-odd Indian casinos where lights flash, money changes hands, and the “house” is sure to win. For many Oklahoma folks, the event is worthy.
