Judge orders Vegas hotel-casino to shut its doors - 2004-01-31
The bankrupt Castaways hotel-casino in Las Vegas is shut down following a US Bankruptcy Court judge's order permitting creditors to foreclose on the Boulder Highway property.

Nevada Gaming Control Board Chairman Dennis Neilander says about 12 enforcement and audit officers assisted in the shutdown of the hotel and casino, which filed for bankruptcy last June.

The Culinary Union, which represents at least half of the 600 workers at the Castaways, was notified of the closure, and a group of union staffers met with workers at the Castaways to discuss next steps.

NFL's late hit on casino isn't the first - 2004-01-31
The National Football League fired its newest salvo in the cold war with Las Vegas just days prior to Sunday's Super Bowl matchup between the New England Patriots and the Carolina Panthers. On the other end of this muscle-flexing was the Palms hotel-casino. But they are not alone.

The popular Las Vegas hot spot received a cease-and-desist letter on Jan. 23 from the NFL, ordering the casino to stop its planned telecast of Super Bowl XXXVIII in its Brenden Theatres complex. The letter stated that such a broadcast would violate the league's copyright on the event.
