County assessor slashes hotel-casino property values - 2004-01-31
Reflecting the fall in Washoe County gaming earnings over the past four years, the county assessor has slashed $113 million from the property values of 12 hotel-casinos.

For the first time, the Silver Legacy — the largest hotel-casino in downtown Reno — has been added to the list of hotel-casinos getting property tax breaks because their incomes have fallen while operating under normal industry standards.

Benefits dicey, but Kansans want casinos - 2004-01-31
Gov. Kathleen Sebelius is proposing the biggest expansion of casino gambling since the frontier days. And Kansas voters seem to be willing to go along by about a 2-1 ratio , according to a new Wichita Eagle/KWCH 12 Eyewitness News poll.

But there is no independent research that would allow lawmakers and voters to evaluate whether casinos would be an engine of economic development or a drain on law enforcement and social-service resources.
