Gambling With Indian Casinos - 2004-01-06
As for his New Year's resolutions, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is trying to get one of the biggest moneymaking industries in the state to hand over a large share of its billions in tax-free income: Indian Casinos.

Good luck to him.

It won't be easy to squeeze more money out of a politically powerful lobby that has long-term contracts signed by the past administration that let it off virtually scot- free from sharing some of its billions in tax-free annual revenue. But as tough as it will be to undo the damage done by former Gov. Gray Davis, it's the right thing to try to do.

Borgata Won't Rest On Its Laurels - 2004-01-06
The slot machines at Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa don't take coins. In addition to that, they have footrests built in, for extra comfort. The parking lot has speed ramps that serve each floor, an improvement over the dizzying mazes tackled by drivers at other casinos.

In the hotel rooms, shower stalls are built for two people. No Gideon Bibles are in the nightstands; the casino's owners felt placing them there would promote Christianity over other religions.

Subtle though they are, the differences are paying off: six months after opening, it has hit the jackpot with Atlantic City regulars, cut deeply into its competitors' businesses and added some cachet to a gambling mecca never considered especially hip.
