State, Casinos Remain At Odds Over New Taxes - 2004-01-07
Almost six months after the state enraged casino owners by raising taxes paid by the gaming halls, opponents say that it has hurt Atlantic City by slowing development. But while the casinos complain, government officials and gaming analysts
say there has been little impact on businesses because the majority of the costs have been passed
onto gamblers who don't seem to mind.
The state's imposition of the new taxes was especially unwelcome by the Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa, which opened its doors less than a week after the new tax was implemented in July. Borgata CEO Robert Boughner said the state should have found other ways to address its budget shortfall without imposing on the casinos, a decision that he says is already thwarting the city's continued development.
