The gloves came off Monday night when supporters of a proposed casino and citizens against gambling convened in Center One in Hampton to hear a report on the gaming industry in Iowa from Wes Ehrecke, president of the Iowa Gaming Association (IGA).

More than two dozen citizens braved sub-zero temperatures to attend the informational meeting, which turned into a forum on the pros and cons of bringing gambling to Franklin County.

"I'm not here to decide if a riverboat is right for Franklin County," Ehrecke started out. "That's up to you."

Why the hospital didn't make story of the year - 2004-01-07
I wasn't surprised that I got an email from a reader upset with us for calling the April 29 Mountain View Casino and Bowl fire the story of the year for 2004 - instead of the ongoing (ad nauseam) hospital woes.

What surprised me, given the life-and-death seriousness that comes with living without nearby bona fide medical facilities, is that only a single criticism from our well-informed and participatory readership was sent in.

But just in case more of you were wondering what thoughts passed through our minds when we compiled our top 10 list - and how the lack of a hospital made number three behind Mountain View and the opening of Wal-Mart - perhaps an explanation is in order.
