Rendell visits Valley, continues pitch for slot machines - 2004-02-13
Gov. Ed Rendell told Valley Democrats on Thursday he still is determined to establish slot-machine gambling and lower property taxes.

During a fund-raising speech at Hill Crest Country Club, Rendell continued to press his case for expanded gambling — the signature issue of his administration thus far — saying a million Pennsylvanians spent $3 billion last year to gamble in neighboring states.

“The state of Pennsylvania got zero benefit out of that,” Rendell said. “If our people are going to gamble anyway, we ought to get the benefit of it in revenue and in jobs.”

Lawmakers to clamp down on pseudo slot machines - 2004-02-13
Iowa lawmakers said Wednesday they will consider putting more restrictions on "amusement devices" similar to video slot machines that have proliferated in the past year at the state's convenience stores, bars and restaurants.

Rep. Scott Raecker, an Urbandale Republican, said after watching a group of middle school students play the machines at a local store, he is concerned there's no law prohibiting minors from playing.

"We need corrective action on that," Raecker said.
