Tribe makes big dollars without port's help - 2004-02-13
I might be crazy, but I don't want public funds paying the Puyallup Tribe of Indians for its gambling losses at the Emerald Queen Casino.

Yet the Port of Tacoma commissioners voted 5-0 this week to do just that.

To quote one of my idols, TV psychologist Dr. Phil,
"What were you thinkin'?"

Port officials defend the agreement as essential to ensure the tribe would withdraw its opposition to the permanent closure of a stretch of Alexander Avenue.

Jazz singer will perform at Chums luncheon - 2004-02-13
Leave it to Louisville Chums Inc., the black women's
civic and social group, to headline a Las Vegas singer at its Valentine's Day scholarship benefit this year — jazz singer Janis Carter.

The former Shawnee High School cheerleader now resides in Las Vegas and has appeared there at the Stardust Resort and Casino, Alexis Park Hotel and Venetian Hotel Casino.

She's returning home tomorrow as the featured act for Louisville Chums' 6th Annual Hearts for the Community Scholarship Luncheon in the Brown & Williamson Club at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium.
