Assembly Speaker Rips Ho-Chunk Casino Agreement - 2004-02-14
In the frenzied final days before the casino referendum vote, opponents were stepping up their attacks. State Assembly Speaker John Gard, R-Peshtigo, zeroed in on the $7 million a year that the Ho-Chunk Nation would pay Madison and Dane County if a casino is opened.

Gard said that county voters were being
"hoodwinked" into believing the Ho-Chunk money is new money from the tribe. Under the compact between the state and the Ho-Chunk, if the tribe gives $7 million a year to the city and county, the Ho-Chunk in three years can reduce their $30 million annual payment to the state by up to $4 million a year.

Tribe's Backer Wants Bridgeport Casino - 2004-02-14
Confessing for the first time that he is the main investor behind the Schaghticoke Indians, Subway Restaurants founder Frederick A. DeLuca said that he will fight to open a tribal casino in Bridgeport.

"There will be a lot of outside investment that will come in, a lot of jobs created. There will be more entertainment options for the citizens. It's all really quite good," DeLuca said in an interview Thursday evening at the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation's offices in Derby.
