Blumenthal, casino opponents address Kent residents - 2004-02-14
A number of casino expansion opponents, including Attorney General Richard Blumenthal, met with residents of Kent to field questions arising from the recent federal recognition of the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation.

Blumenthal has been highly critical of the federal recognition process, saying it is flawed and driven by money and gambling.

The Kent-based tribe received its federal status on Jan. 29, clearing the way for the tribe to negotiate with the state to open a casino. Since then, Blumenthal has traveled to towns throughout western Connecticut, pledging to appeal the decision on the basis that the Schaghticokes did not meet all seven federal criteria, most notably the one establishing the members as a continuous community.

Pinnacle tries to reach one with casino project - 2004-02-14
Pinnacle Entertainment Inc. is a company in a hurry.

The casino operator is pushing hard to increase revenue, upgrade its mix of properties and make a clean break with its past.

Pinnacle's plan to invest $550 million in casino developments in downtown St. Louis and Lemay plays a major role in that evolution, says Daniel R. Lee, chairman and chief executive.

Pinnacle's vision for the region - the nation's eighth-largest casino market - contributed to the success of its recent offering of 11.5 million additional shares and the accompanying rise in its stock price, Lee said.
