Commission Seeks Clarity On Casino Tax Bills - 2004-02-14
The state Tax Commission wants legislators to "clear up the law" on whether the agency has the right to calculate casino tax bills and to determine whether free-play credits casinos give gamblers are taxable. The House Gaming Committee on reviewed a recent court ruling on free-play taxes that went against the Tax Commission in a lawsuit filed by Beau Rivage casino. Chancellor Carter Bise granted summary judgment to Beau Rivage, ruling that the state Gaming Commission, not the Tax Commission, has authority to calculate casino tax bills under the present law.

Indian Casino Plans Unveiled - 2004-02-14
Harrah's and the tribe said the facility, which would offer 3,500 gaming stations, a 500-room hotel and "full entertainment amenities" would generate 3,200 permanent casino jobs with an average yearly salary of $47,000 and over $100 million in new state revenues.

Casino proponents argue that, unlike Lincoln Park and Newport Grand, the casino would constitute a sustainable source of gaming revenue in the face of Massachusetts' own efforts to approve slot machines at existing dog tracks.
