Federal programs out of reach of Schaghticokes - for now - 2004-02-15
When the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation received federal recognition last month, much of the focus was on where and if the tribe would open a casino.

But the federal status also opens other doors for American Indians through grant funds, education opportunities and other services. The Kent-based Schaghticokes want to use grant money to restore the tribal language, develop housing for elders and track down lost tribal artifacts.

"These are things we've always striven for," tribal council member Dean Pomeroy told the News-Times.

Reviving the Carnival Ball - 2004-02-15
On Friday 20 February at 8.30pm, the Casino Maltese will open its doors to welcome ladies and gentlemen sporting 18th century finery in a throwback to a tradition which is far from forgotten.

According to one of the organisers, Mario Attard Trevisan, president of Lions Club, Valletta, the need to bring back a Grand Carnival Ball in the capital is something which has long been felt.

“We have been trying to revive this tradition for the last five years, but unfortunately our biggest problem has been finding the sponsors in order to keep the prices as low as possible. We almost succeeded a few years ago, but had to cancel it due
to lack of interest. This time, however, we are determined to do it at all costs,” Mr Attard Trevisan said.
