Two southern California schools follow lead of other institutions to prepare students for growth industry - 2004-02-15
Here in the American Indian gaming capital of California, the casino and the campus have entered into a marriage of mutual financial benefit.
Two local institutions of higher education are developing certificate programs in gambling-ology to prepare students for jobs in one of the few growth industries in the state: Indian casinos.

Grossmont College in El Cajon hopes next month to get approval to award a certificate of achievement for students finishing courses in the program Tribal Gaming: Culture and Policies. Officials at the two-year college hope the program will evolve into an associate of arts program, with units transferable to four-year colleges.

Mayor to reallocate gaming revenues - 2004-02-15
Country Club Hills Mayor Dwight Welch says he has no problem with neighboring Hazel Crest's withdrawal of support for a riverboat casino in the city.

"We're still rolling forward," Welch said. "They're just not part of the ball."

The funds simply will be reallocated to communities that do back the plan, he said.

After deciding during a Feb. 3 administrative meeting to endorse the casino project and sending Welch a letter of intent, the Hazel Crest board — swayed by residents' concerns — reneged its support last week.
