Last year, one of the largest families on the Redding Rancheria committed what Indians call the ultimate desecration: They exhumed the remains of two of their ancestors for DNA testing.

"It's a sacrilege, it's totally disrespectful, but I had to do it," said Bob Foreman, elder statesman of the 76-member clan.

It was either that or face being forced to leave the tribe. The rancheria's enrollment committee had ordered the Foremans to prove they were the direct descendants of the family matriarch, the late Virginia "Nano" Timmons, or be stripped of their tribal membership - including health and education benefits and about $40,000 a year per person from the tribe's Win-River Casino.

So what if these were only the first auditions and the prizes were of small value?

There still was extra electricity in the air inside Fantasy Springs Casino in Indio Saturday afternoon.

The "Wheel of Fortune" gang had come to town in search of new contestants for its long-running TV game show and the event turned out to be a good draw as three audition shows attracted a combined total of at least 1,400.

And it was during the course of an afternoon energized by the pitchman delivery of Wheel traveling road host Marty Lublin that the names of about 150 of them were drawn at random for participation in the on-stage auditions.
