Aucklanders to take a punt at new gambling policy - 2004-02-15
Aucklanders are being asked to give their opinion on Auckland City’s new draft gambling venue policy that limits the number of electronic gaming machines, known as pokies.

The new policy is a requirement under the Gambling Act, passed into law on 19 September 2003. Under the Act, councils are required to adopt a policy for class four gambling venues. Class four gambling is defined as any activity that involves the use of a gaming machine outside a casino. Class four gaming may only be conducted by a corporate society and only to raise money for community purposes.

NEW NEVADA LEGISLATION: Banks hit hard by payroll tax - 2004-02-15
The payroll tax that the Nevada Legislature enacted into law last year is a disturbance to a few of the larger employers but a disaster for some small ones.

Companies affected by the new tax range from an independent banker who worries about having to shut down branches in small towns to a large casino operator who considers the tax a disincentive
to hiring new workers. Among others who will be hit by the tax include a woman who hired people to take care of her invalid mother at home.
