Talk of new Conn. casino sparks traffic worry - 2004-02-16
The odds of getting a royal flush in a hand of poker are about 1 in 650,000. The likelihood of Connecticut's hosting another Indian casino looks a bit better — a possibility that has many officials in the Nutmeg State cringing and local residents peering anxiously across the border.

The Schaghticoke Tribal Nation, based in Derby and Kent, Conn., received federal recognition Jan. 29 — giving it access to funding for education, health care and housing, and the power to operate a casino.

Federal programs out of reach of Schaghticokes - for now - 2004-02-16
When the Schaghticoke Tribal Nation got federal recognition last month, a lot of the focus was on where and if the tribe would build a casino.

But the federal status also opens other doors for American Indians through grant money, education opportunities and other services. The Kent-based Schaghticokes want to use grant money to restore the tribal language, construct housing for elders and track down lost tribal artifacts.

"These are things we've always striven for," tribal council member Dean Pomeroy told the News-Times.
