States in region seen competing for slots money - 2004-02-16
As Pennsylvania lawmakers revive the debate on legalizing slot machines, the arguments in favor have a familiar ring to Marylanders - that the state must stop the flow of money to neighboring states where the devices are permitted.

In Maryland, slots proponents say the same thing about competition with the state's neighbors, including, potentially, Pennsylvania.

Pitting one state against another has proved a successful strategy as the gambling industry has expanded across the country. Because casinos pay taxes that fund important programs, lawmakers view gambling across state lines as a drain on the treasury.

New casino to boost Klerksdorp economy - 2004-02-16
The development of a multi-million rand casino resort in Klerksdorp in the North West is expected to boost the local economy by creating job opportunities.

The construction of the Tusk Rio Hotel Resort comes
at a time when some of the country's largest mining
houses have been retrenching workers at their operations in the Kosh area.

Klerksdorp is the bigger of the three towns making up the Kosh Municipality and gold mining operations dominate the local economy. Local unemployment reached a peak in 2000 when the rand was at its weakest against the US dollar and mines were forced to lay off workers.
