Allure of owning casino should be rebuffed by state - 2004-02-16
Raking in earnings from a casino or riverboat would be difficult for anyone to pass up. But the state of Illinois is not "anyone."

The thought of the state owning a casino may be as tempting as gambling itself, but elected officials sometimes have to say "No" based on principle and kick their nasty addictions to grabbing any new revenue they can.

State officials have been tempted by one of seven bids for the last of 10 available state gambling licenses. The payback to the state appears to range from $205 million to a unique proposal worth about $506 million over 15 to 20 years.

U.S. inquiry threatens power of prominent Illinois lobbyist - 2004-02-16
A big contractor, a major casino company, the state medical association, liquor distributors and a few other businesses have all come to see lobbyist Al Ronan when they needed something from Illinois politicians.

Over more than a decade, the 55-year-old lawmaker-turned-lobbyist has developed a reputation for his extraordinary ability to open doors for his clients, whether it's in county government, in Springfield, Ill., or in Chicago's City Hall.

"Al Ronan is the consummate insider," said state Sen. Miguel del Valle, D-Chicago, a political rival who has clashed with Ronan on numerous issues.
