Nipmucs worry council - 2004-02-16
Members of the Northeastern Connecticut Council of Governments expressed a bit of concern Friday that federal recognition of Indian tribes in the region could hurt life in the Quiet Corner.

Although there is no official action or plans, state lawmakers and Windham County officials continue to worry that the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs will recognize the Nipmuc tribe as soon as May 1.

Many local officials said a third casino in eastern Connecticut would have a significant impact on traffic, industry and criminal activity and would disrupt town operations.

Woman shot to death, boyfriend hurt - 2004-02-16
Homicide detectives were still trying late Sunday to piece together the events that lead up to a shooting earlier in the morning by Harrah's Casino that left a 22-year-old woman dead and her boyfriend wounded.

The boyfriend drove his mortally wounded girlfriend to the Rincon Fire Station on Highway 76 about 2:50 a.m. for help, sheriff's homicide Sgt. Gary Haigh said. Firefighters immediately called the Sheriff's Department to say there was an injured male and a possibly deceased female at the station, he said.-
