Poker machine purge in South Australia - 2004-02-17
It's not often that a State premier decides to lower the number of poker machines, but the South Australian Labor Government is thinking of taking the radical step of slashing the number of pokies by 20 per cent.
The move has been welcomed by church groups and the State's Independent "No Pokies" MP, Nick Xenophon. They see it as a positive first step in helping chronic gamblers overcome their addiction. However the Hotels Association says there's no causal link between the number of poker machines and problem gambling, and the move is simply populist window dressing.
