Poker machine purge in South Australia - 2004-02-17
It's not often that a State premier decides to lower the number of poker machines, but the South Australian Labor Government is thinking of taking the radical step of slashing the number of pokies by 20 per cent.

The move has been welcomed by church groups and the State's Independent "No Pokies" MP, Nick Xenophon. They see it as a positive first step in helping chronic gamblers overcome their addiction. However the Hotels Association says there's no causal link between the number of poker machines and problem gambling, and the move is simply populist window dressing.

Archbishop welcomes SA poker machine reduction - 2004-02-17
Adelaide's Archbishop Philip Wilson has praised the South Australian Government for its plan to eliminate 3000 poker machines from the state's hotels and clubs.

The machines will be taken away from the hotel and club premises if a conscience vote in State Parliament endorses a 20% reduction in gaming machine numbers.

"Any reduction in access to methods of gambling can only help the problem," he said. "And while this reduction is a good start, it is one of a number of measures needed to minimise the harm done by problem gambling."
