Smoke ban has its price - 2004-02-17
The city's crackdown on smoking has consumed $1.3 million of its 2003 budget and makes it more and more difficult to freeze property taxes, councillors say. "It's going to hurt our budgeting if that's the decrease," Coun. Gord Steeves said yesterday.

However, the bad news comes amid unconfirmed reports that the Doer government is considering handing a share of general casino revenues to the city as part of Mayor Glen Murray's "newer deal."

The rumoured transfer of revenue from the province's two Winnipeg casinos couldn't be confirmed by Manitoba Lotteries Corp. or the mayor's office last night.

Casinos' impact aid insufficient - 2004-02-17
Windham County leaders are rightfully worried about the impact that hosting a Nipmuc tribe casino would have on their towns.

Quiet Corner leaders can do more than fret about what the future may hold. They can lobby for casino host communities to get a bigger piece of the pie to lessen their burden by calling for the state's funding formula for impact aid to towns to be changed.

And they should enlist the support of Norwich, Preston, Montville, Ledyard and North Stonington, which are already affected by casinos.
