The city's crackdown on smoking has consumed $1.3 million of its 2003 budget and makes it more and more difficult to freeze property taxes, councillors say. "It's going to hurt our budgeting if that's the decrease," Coun. Gord Steeves said yesterday.
However, the bad news comes amid unconfirmed reports that the Doer government is considering handing a share of general casino revenues to the city as part of Mayor Glen Murray's "newer deal."
The rumoured transfer of revenue from the province's two Winnipeg casinos couldn't be confirmed by Manitoba Lotteries Corp. or the mayor's office last night.
