Coalition pushes Detroit to rebid casino licenses - 2004-02-17
The Community Coalition, which headed a failed attempt in the late 1990s to obtain a casino license for Detroit businessman Don Barden, plans to try again to get the city to rebid its casino licenses.

The group hopes to collect enough signatures by June 30 to put the matter on the November ballot. Though petition language won’t be completed until this weekend — when coalition members join a celebration for Barden in Las Vegas — the group’s goal is to get an ordinance that allows casinos but doesn’t include preferences for any group.

Legislature has best plan on casinos - 2004-02-17
The steamroller known as casino gambling appears to have become an irresistible force in Nebraska.

Three separate petition drives and a proposed constitutional amendment from the Legislature might all appear on the ballot. The upshot is that casino gambling will be a reality in Nebraska.

We do not see this as progress but accept that casino gambling is possibly not too far down the road. That's also why we support the limited, albeit vague, plan put forth by the Legislature. That plan would allow for eight casinos in the state, but makes no mention of location, regulation or the spending of the money it produces.
