Don't blame tribe for sharp dealing - 2004-02-17
Local anti casino groups are in one last big lather because the Ho-Chunk Nation won't have to dig much deeper to pay off local governments for the right to operate a Madison casino. As it turns out, the tribe will simply take the money out of payments they had originally promised to state government.

Don't blame the tribe. They just did a better job protecting their own interests than Gov. Jim Doyle was able to do for the state as a whole.

The everlasting tribal gambling compacts - we call them sweetheart deals - were struck by Doyle's negotiators without legislative oversight.

High-stakes casino vote finally here - 2004-02-17
After six weeks of hearing the pros and cons of a casino in Madison, Dane County voters will decide today whether they want DeJope Bingo Hall to be converted into a casino.

With a Democratic primary on the same ballot, along with two suburban school referendums and several primaries, Dane County Clerk Joe Parisi predicts a 40 percent turnout of eligible voters in the county.

That would be about 133,000 voters - high for a spring election, Parisi said.

"There's a unique set of circumstances," Parisi said.
