Mashantuckets Join In Maine 'Racino' Plan - 2004-02-18
The Mashantucket Pequots, owners of Foxwoods Resort Casino, are loaning funds and know how to two American Indian tribes in Maine that hope to manage a slot machine operation at a harness track in Bangor.

The Mashantuckets would have 30 percent ownership in the joint venture with the Passamaquoddy and Penobscot tribes, which have proposed a “racino” at the Bangor Raceway. Horse and dog track operators throughout the country have installed slot machines over the past several years to offset declining revenues. Racinos are popular - and highly profitable - even though they do not have table games or offer the level of amenities found at full-scale casinos.

Welch to reallocate gaming revenues - 2004-02-18
Country Club Hills Mayor Dwight Welch said he is okay with neighboring Hazel Crest's withdrawal of support for a riverboat casino in the city.
"We're still rolling forward," Welch commented.
"They're just not part of the ball."

The money simply will be reallocated to communities that support the plan, he said.

After deciding during a Feb. 3 administrative meeting to endorse the casino project and sending Welch a letter of intent, the Hazel Crest board — swayed by residents' concerns — reneged on its support last week.
