Louisiana Casinos Win $183 Million In January - 2004-02-18
Louisiana's state licensed casinos won $183 million from players in January, an increase of at least 10 percent in part fueled by two additional slot-machine outlets at race tracks. Gamblers lost $135.2 million at the 14 riverboat casinos, $25.8 million at a casino in New Orleans and $22 million at the three race-track casinos in January, state police reported Tuesday.

Without casinos at Louisiana Downs at Bossier City, which opened last summer, and the Evangeline Downs casino at Opelousas, which opened in December, the take was $161.4 million in January 2003.

Editorial: After the casino vote - 2004-02-18
The defeat of the referendum that would have allowed conversion of the DeJope bingo hall into a casino should be looked over carefully by all the players in the debate over the development of gambling in Dane County.

The proposal had broad support from political leaders like Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk, from local labor unions and from the Wisconsin State Journal. And proponents of a yes vote had more money - most of it donated by the Ho-Chunk Nation, which owns DeJope - than any campaign in the history of Dane County.
