Subpanel Ok's Casino-Gambling Amendment - 2004-02-18
A measure to change the state Constitution to permit casino gambling in Shelby County passed a House subcommittee. The resolution is sponsored by Rep. Larry Miller, D-Memphis, chairman of the State Government subcommittee that passed it. Voters removed a ban against lotteries from the state Constitution by referendum 15 months ago, and the state's lottery began operating last month.

However, the Constitution still bars casino gambling with blackjack and roulette. Miller's resolution would call another referendum on a constitutional amendment to allow casino gambling only within Shelby County.

West Memphis Lawmaker Wants Legalized Video Poker Gambling - 2004-02-18
A bill permitting race tracks to offer video poker and other electronic gambling has been filed by Representative Steven Jones of West Memphis. Jones said the bill would bring in an additional 26 million dollars a year in new state revenue.

He said the measure also would help counties that border other states because it would provide some alternative to relying only on a sales tax increase.
