Clark County OKs agreement for possible Cowlitz tribal casino - 2004-02-18
In a meeting filled with angry outbursts from some people in the audience, Clark County commissioners Tuesday unanimously approved an agreement that will govern relations with the Cowlitz tribe if it develops 152 acres west of La Center junction.

The anticipated use of the land -- a casino -- drew a less-than-enthusiastic response. The tribe is preparing an environmental assessment for a casino, although it has not formallyannounced its plans.

The next step, expected within about two weeks, is for the tribe to resubmit, with more detail, an application to the U.S. Department of the Interior to place the land in federal trust. That would take it off the tax rolls and exempt it from local laws.

Mayor Rebuts Gurnee Slam Against Casino License Bid - 2004-02-18
The war of words between the city and Gurnee over the proposed pLakehurst-area casino escalated February 17, when Mayor Richard Hyde wrote a rebuttal to Gurnee counterpart Don Rudny's January letter urging the Illinois Gaming Board to deny Waukegan's gaming bid.

"I realize not everyone is going to support our effort in this matter, and it is not my intention to respond to every challenge or criticism we might receive," Hyde wrote. "However, Mr. Rudny's letter presents as facts matters that clearly are little more than opinion."
