Mayor Leads Defeat of Wisconsin Casino Plan - 2004-02-19
Just as Bill Clinton exemplified in New Hampshire in 1992, John Edwards' surprisingly strong second-place showing in Wisconsin's Democratic primary proved that you don't have to be a winner to boost your campaign.
Edwards drew 34 percent of the vote compared to Massachusetts Sen. John Kerry's 40 percent.
"I don't think anybody thought it would be this close," said Madison City Councilman Zach Brandon, an Edwards supporter.
But there's another "Comeback Kid" in town today. Madison Mayor Dave Cieslewicz led a last-minute, shoestring campaign to stop a casino from being built on the outskirts of town.
