Fresno County, Calif., Official Fears Environmental Impact of Casino Plan - 2004-02-20
A Caesars Entertainment casino in the Friant-Auberry area would lure more tourists and workers,
which will cause more traffic and air pollution in a region with insufficient sewer and water systems, a Fresno County official claims.

The $200 million casino -- with a 250- to 300-room hotel, more than 75,000 square feet of gaming space, 2,000 slot machines, 20 gaming tables, retail and entertainment -- would be the largest in the central San Joaquin Valley.

Survey Shows Casino Wages Not Minimum - 2004-02-20
Flipping a burger on a grill at a casino hotel resort can get you about nine dollars an hour, according to federal labor statistics. Contrary to arguments of some critics of the proposed Indian casino, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that many of the 136 job opportunities it cites in casinos around the country pay well above California's minimum of $6.75 an hour.

That could mean a boon to the city's residents, casino organizers say. "For Hesperia residents, there will be a hiring preference," said Tom Reynolds, spokesman for the Timbisha Shoshone tribe, which would run the casino. "And training programs will be in place."
