Banks, Small Businesses Hit Hard by Nevada's New Payroll Tax - 2004-02-20
The payroll tax that the Nevada Legislature put into law last year is an annoyance to some of the larger employers but a catastrophe for some of the smaller ones.

Companies affected by the new tax range from an independent banker who worries about having to shut down branches in small towns to a large casino operator who considers the tax a disincentive to hiring new workers. Among others who will be hit by the tax include a woman who hired people to take care of her invalid mother at home.

Reno tourism execs stress need for diverse business - 2004-02-20
Promoting northern Nevada as an adventure venue,
attracting more conventions and customized marketing to loyal casino goers are keys to Reno's economic survival in the face of increased competition from tribal casinos, industry leaders were told Thursday.

But one panelist at the inaugural Northern Nevada Gaming Summit said Reno's days as a gambling draw are long gone and efforts to regain lost ground for wagered dollars amount to "fantasized impossible dreams."
