Casino Makes Offer To Lawmakers - 2004-02-20
The gambling debate persisted at the Statehouse in closed-door meetings.

Last week, the Iowa Supreme Court requested the state to pay land-based casinos at least $100 million
in back taxes. The case affects Prairie Meadows Racetrack Casino in Altoona, Dubuque Greyhound Park and Casino, and Bluffs Run Casino and Greyhound Park in Council Bluffs. Then, in a letter to one lawmaker, the Racing Association of Central Iowa said they want some things in exchange for the money.

Senators battle casino issue in face of swelling deficit - 2004-02-20
Some stressful moments crept into Thursday morning's debate as legislators attempted to balance their concerns about gambling with the state's revenue needs.

More than one senator brought up the 8th Circuit Appeal's Court decision Wednesday reinforcing lower court rulings that then-Gov. Ben Nelson unfairly kept a low-level nuclear waste site from being built in the state.

As a result, Nebraska must pay a $150 million penalty plus $25 million in attorney fees, adding to the state's budget squeeze and legislator worries.
