Senators Seek Casino Compromise - 2004-02-20
The funder of a casino gambling proposal remains optimistic about its chances this year - at least in some form. State Sen. DiAnna Schimek of Lincoln said Thursday she expects lawmakers to put something on the ballot this fall to compete with initiative petition measures.

But she wasn't ready to predict whether that something would be the current version of Legislative Resolution 14CA or some compromise version. Lawmakers spent much of Thursday morning talking about potential alternatives.

The online gaming industry’s concerns that the Treasury may hamper attempts by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport to tempt online casinos to the U.K., by introducing heavy taxation, have spilled in to the press this week.

Currently high street bookmakers pay 15% tax on gross profits and rumours are circulating that, once the forthcoming Gambling Bill is passed, Internet casinos could be required to do the same.
