Lifeguards start training today - 2004-02-21
Intense training starts today to ready Pensacola Beach lifeguards for the occupied tourist season.

On March 1, West plans to launch lifeguard towers at Casino Beach, Park East and Fort Pickens. If surf is rough, West may concentrate manpower at Casino Beach.

West has 22 returning lifeguards and plans to employ 11 additional ones in April. To qualify, the lifeguards must possess a Red Cross Lifesaving Certificate; have to run 1.5 miles in less than 12 minutes; and have to swim 600 yards in 10 minutes.

Schaghticoke acknowledgement ruling to be appealed - 2004-02-21
In spite of pressure to go straight to federal court, Connecticut will rather file an appeal of the Schaghticoke recognition ruling with a U.S. Interior Department review board.

The federal Bureau of Indian Affairs late last month granted the Schaghticokes federal recognition, which is the primary step toward developing a casino. The state had 30 days to settle the appeals process with the tribe.
