Victim's family seeks profits from Nevada killer's best seller - 2004-02-22
Donna Seres thought it was terrible enough that Jimmy Lerner killed her brother at a Reno hotel-casino in 1997. Then, she became furious when she
found out Lerner wrote a best-selling book on the crime based on notes smuggled out of a Nevada prison.

Now, Seres is taking her lawsuit seeking Lerner's book profits to the Nevada Supreme Court in a case that will test the constitutionality of a state law designed to stop convicts from profiting from their crimes.

She's appealing a judge's ruling that the law is unconstitutional. The Supreme Court gave no indication when it would rule after holding oral arguments last week.

Gambling bill still in limbo - 2004-02-22
Last summer, the state House and Senate passed separate bills legalizing slot machines, but when lawmakers were about to vote on final legislation in December, legislative leaders backed out.

"It fell apart because of Indian casino gambling," said state Rep. Daylin Leach, D-149 Dist.

At the 11th hour, Sen. Vincent Fumo, D-Phila., quashed the vote, worrying that if Pennsylvania excluded the possibility of a future American Indian-run casino, the state stood to lose any of that revenue.
