Joan Guzman plans to show off big punch at Sports Arena - 2004-02-22
His name is Joan. Laugh and you may get flattened.
Joan Guzman is being heralded as a "Little Tyson," having won all 20 of his professional fights, 16 by knockouts. Pronounce his Christian name "Jo-ann."

"No," said Rafael Guerrero, Guzman's manager, "is no common name in the Dominican Republic."

Guzman, according to Guerrero, is no common fighter, either, this 25-year-old who defends his WBO super bantamweight title at the San Diego Sports Arena Thursday against Agapito Sanchez, also from the Dominican.

The scheduled 12-round Guzman-Sanchez bout represents a joint promotional venture by the Sycuan Casino and Resort, which has purchased a promotional tie to Guzman, and Golden Boy Promotions, Oscar De La Hoya's promotional arm.
