Bureau of Indian Affairs staff linked to Miwok tribe dispute - 2004-02-22
Amid the rolling hills of vineyards in what is emerging as one of California's fast-growing wine regions, a once-tiny, almost destitute tribe is pushing hard to construct a $100 million casino.

It is doing so only because regional Bureau of Indian Affairs officials launched the tribe's membership rolls against the request of its traditional leadership, then oversaw an election that swapped the old leadership for a pro-casino group in addition to some BIA officials themselves.

Tourists taken for ride thanks to cab scheme - 2004-02-22
Margaret Mentecki may be from the Dairy State, but she didn't take well to getting milked.
Mentecki became distrustful when a cab ride from the airport to her off-Strip hotel took longer than former visits. And when the scenery transformed to scrub brush and dirt, her fears were confirmed: She was being long-hauled.

When the cab actually arrived at the hotel-casino, her fare was $43.10, roughly twice what it had cost on other trips.
