State Casino Gambling Unlikely, Bredesen Says - 2004-02-22
Gov. Phil Bredesen claims it is ''virtually impossible''
that Tennessee would have casino gambling in the near future, despite some legislative movement this year to approve casinos in Memphis. ''We just started a lottery that's not a month old. The issue to extend gambling any further in the state ought to stop right there for five to 10 years, and then let's look at where we are,'' Bredesen said.

The House State and Local Government Committee is scheduled to take up a resolution today that could be the vehicle. Even if it meets approval, it would take multiple votes of the House and Senate before voters could have their say, at the earliest in 2006.

The development of a multi-million rand casino resort in Klerksdorp in the North West is anticipated to boost the local economy by generating jobs.

The construction of the Tusk Rio Hotel Resort comes at a time when some of the country's biggest mining houses have been retrenching workers at their operations in the Kosh area. [The] construction of the new hotel, at a cost of more than a R100 million will create more than 4 000 jobs.
